Mendelssohn completed his intimate and moving Four Pieces for String Quartet during the last few years of his life. At a time when Brahms was continually haunted by the fear that his creative force had dried up, he heard the virtuoso clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld and was inspired enough to promptly begin work on this Clarinet Quintet.
